Gormanach House

Gormanach House

Located between Ashtead and Ewell in Surrey, Gormanach House provides care and support for adults with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs, including behaviours of concern.

Welcome

Gormanach House, meaning “house in green fields”, is located within walking distance of another of our services in Epsom, a market town in Surrey. The house has good relationships with the professionals from the area including the local GP, psychiatrist, chiropodist, pharmacy and community nurse.

Our approach

Each person has a keyworker who supports in developing and achieving people’s identified short and long-term goals. This might be learning a new skill, visiting a new place or improving a person’s wellbeing, and individuals are encouraged to pursue their interests as well develop new ones.

Gormanach House celebrates multi culturalism with both staff and individuals using the service coming from various backgrounds and cultures. As such we often enjoy cooking meals from various countries enabling us to experience and sharing them with everyone within the home.

Individuals’ needs are assessed and staffing ratios defined to allow individuals to be active members of the community, providing opportunities to access activities of choice and be supported to integrate as part of the wider community.

Quite often the house receives compliments from families and other professionals for the care and support provided to the individuals.

Independence

We encourage individuals to be as independent as possible by promoting ownership of the home and aim to provide a friendly, supportive and calm environment that ensures individuals feel safe, respected and supported.

Gormanach House takes pride in using easy read material to support individuals in the service to understand information before making any choices. People are encouraged and prompted to partake in the daily household chores and cooking their own meals.

Daily life

Personal development and education are encouraged at Gormanach House, so some of the individuals attend nearby colleges. We also enjoy a range of activities within and around the home, including long walks at the nature reserve, play music and video games, listen to music, play basketball or enjoy space in the homes large garden.

Birthday parties and BBQs held in the summer are always enjoyed, and the neighboring home joins us. We value community participation and interaction and as such we make the most of our proximity to public transport and accessing fantastic range of activities that being close to London provides us with, including trips to beaches when the weather allows.

The people we support are encouraged to maintain contact with their families so family visits are promoted to the service as well as support for overnight visits with families.

Individuals are supported to maintain a healthy lifestyle by being provided with physical activities options like swimming, walks, indoor exercise bicycle, outdoor trampoline and a healthy well-balanced diet.

Accommodation

The property is a six-bedroom house, all rooms are single occupancy and offer en suite facilities with either a bath or a shower/wet room. On the ground floor there are four communal living areas. There are three separate lounge areas including a quiet space, along with a large airy conservatory adjacent to the dining room. This offers a great deal of choice and space for all of our individuals.

Bedrooms are decorated according to individual tastes and preferences, promoting individuality and creating a personal space for everyone living at Gormanach House.

There is a shared kitchen and dining room area where the individuals can be supported with meal preparation and various other activities too. There is also a communal laundry in which people are encouraged and supported to carry out their own washing and ironing.

The property benefits from a large, enclosed garden surrounded by fields and woodland.

Staff & Therapeutic Services

Prior to employment, potential staff undergo strict referencing and DBS checks. Staff participate in a thorough induction process and undergo mandatory training so they are prepared and given the tools to deliver an outstanding service. Staff have additional opportunities to develop by way of diplomas and additional training sessions. All staff are fully aware of safeguarding and whistleblowing procedures, having competency assessments and updates throughout the year.

The people we support at Gormanach House have access to a variety of different Therapeutic Services such as aromatherapy, speech and language therapy, music therapy and occupational therapy. See more information on our Therapeutic Services here.
