Resident’s Green Fingers Produce the Goods
A resident in one of our homes in Gainsborough has been putting his green fingers to good use and has produced his very first vegetables.
George moved into Tigh Bruadair in 2024 and asked if he could redesign the garden so he could grow his own vegetables.
Staff at the home openly welcomed the suggestion and together with George, they immediately set about redesigning the garden area with some raised beds so he, and other residents, could start to grow their own veg.
After months of painstaking work to get the garden ready and lots of tender loving care looking after the plants, the fruits of his labour are now starting to bear as he has just harvested his very first leeks.
The leeks will now be enjoyed by the home’s residents as they will form part of their meal ingredients when they make a stew.
Mark Bond, the Deputy Manager at Tigh Brudair said, “We are all very proud of George and it has been great to be part of the project. From the instant he suggested growing vegetables to the moment he pulled the first one out the ground, it has been amazing. He has thrown himself into the project and to see how much joy and enjoyment he has got out of it has been wonderful.
“This is why we always encourage our residents to set their own goals and ambitions so they can experience moments like this. Well done to George, and the other residents, and we can’t wait to start using the vegetables in our meals.”
George is not stopping there, though, as he is currently tending cherry tomatoes, lettuce and chillies. Unfortunately, he was growing carrots, but the frost got to them, but not to be deterred he is now looking at what are the best materials to cover them for when it gets frosty again.
