Learning Disability Week: Meet Bethany!

Celebrating progress, independence, and personality at An Caladh

As part of Learning Disability Week, we sat down with Bethany, or Beth, as she prefers to be called, to hear more about her life, her interests, and her incredible journey over the past 11 years at An Caladh.

Beth is 29 years old (almost 30 – her birthday is on the 19th of August!) and recently celebrated her 11-year anniversary living at An Caladh on June 9th. When she first moved in, Beth faced more restrictions in her daily life, but she has come such a long way, growing in confidence and independence.

She loves the colour blue (she used to love pink but proudly says she’s a bit of a tomboy now), and her favourite food is Jollof rice – with special shout-outs to Britney and Loverage, whose Nigerian and Ghanaian versions are her favourite.

Beth’s room at An Caladh is one of her favourite places, complete with a pink carpet, her treasured teddies, and lots of Minnie Mouse! She also loves her iPad and headphones, and enjoys spending time with the team who support her.

In her free time, Beth has a wide range of hobbies – from watching football and Formula 1 to enjoying wrestling and boxing. She’s a big fan of going into town, especially with her friend Phoebe from Tigh Coilean. They’re even planning a trip to Blackpool together at the end of the month! Beth also enjoys shopping, going to concerts, and visiting the horses at the stables run by one of An Caladh’s seniors – she’s especially excited about a new foal who was born last week!

Beth has already had experience volunteering in a café and hopes to one day take on a volunteer care role in the NHS. Her long-term dream is to live in supported living, and we’re so proud of the steps she’s taken to make that a future possibility.

Beth is a valued part of the An Caladh community, and we’re so proud to celebrate her journey during Learning Disability Week.
