Breast Cancer Awareness Event
On 14th August, Suillean House held a charity afternoon tea in aid of Breast Cancer Now. The Kisimul community came together, and we managed to raise an incredible £422.20. The event was filled with laughter, important conversations and plenty of tea, cake and sandwiches.
The event also marked the launch of our new ‘Breast Examination Kit’, launched in collaboration with our Speech and Language Therapist, Lou Brown. The kit is designed to support people with learning disabilities understand breast/chest health, recognise changes, feel what different lumps and bumps may feel like on their body, and support them to be able to access the right support. In true Lou style, she came armed with a variety of different resources, tailored to different communication styles. This innovative tool reflects our commitment to making health education accessible to everyone.
The event was particularly meaningful as it was inspired by a recent diagnosis of one of our individuals at Suillean. They have been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called PTEN, which increases lifetime risk of developing breast cancer to as high as 85-89%. Their journey has been at the heart of our efforts to raise awareness and improve access to resources for all.
We also took time to remember Rebecca Booth, a much-missed resident from An Caladh, who passed away in April 2021 after her fight with breast cancer. Her memory continues to inspire us to raise awareness to help others in the future.
Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone who attended, we not only raised vital funds for Breast Cancer Now, but also sparked conversations which will help save lives through early detection and awareness.
